Summary: The aim of this study was to assess cognitive impairment and analyze its relationship with socioeconomic variables, lifestyle, depressive symptoms, food and nutritional security and DNA methylation levels in the NR3C1 promoter region in the peripheral blood of adult users of the Public Health System (SUS) in the municipality of Alegre. Cognitive performance was assessed by the Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) in 70 students aged 20 to 59 years. In addition, a relationship between sociodemographic variables and lifestyle was investigated. The volunteers were recruited by the Municipal Health Secretariat of the City of Alegre, in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The 1F region of the NR3C1 gene (CpG 40-47) was analyzed by pyrosequencing using DNA derived from peripheral blood. Our main findings were the differences between cognitive performance, more precisely in the ability to evoke immediately, in relation to marital status and education and learning capacity in relation to the practice of leisure activity and food and nutritional security. The results found in this study show a relationship between sociodemographic variables and lifestyle in cognition. The data collected in this study contribute to the discussion and implementation of public policies to promote health care for the Brazilian population.
